Managing Conflicts with Time Blocks

This article explains how to create time blocks to manage schedule conflicts.

Time Blocks

Adding a time block

You can create a time block from the Calendar in a few ways:

  • Click Add from the calendar toolbar and choose New time block

  • Click on a calendar day and choose Add Time Block

  • Create one directly for a specific date from the day dialog

Time blocks let you mark time on your calendar that should be treated as unavailable or protected. They do not create lessons, events, invoices, or attendance records.

What time blocks do

A time block appears on the calendar as its own calendar item and can be used to represent things like:

  • vacations

  • holidays

  • rehearsals

  • performances

  • personal appointments

  • any time you want to block off

If enforce conflicts is enabled on the time block, Cadence Calendar checks for overlapping lessons and events and treats those overlaps as conflicts.

What happens when there is a conflict

If a lesson or event overlaps a conflict-enforced time block:

  • the calendar shows a conflict indicator

  • conflict icons can appear in the toolbar and on affected days

  • lessons or events with conflicts can show a conflict outline based on the related time block color

  • clicking into the conflict indicators opens a conflict dialog so you can review what overlaps with what

The conflict dialog can show:

  • the lesson or event that conflicts

  • the time block it conflicts with

  • the day and time of the overlap

From that dialog, you can also delete conflicting lessons or events, including deleting all currently shown conflicting items when needed.

What time blocks do not do

Time blocks do not automatically:

  • cancel lessons

  • move lessons or events

  • delete lessons or events

  • mark attendance

  • create invoices

They are used to block time visually and to surface overlap problems clearly.

Editing and managing time blocks

You can open a time block later to:

  • change its title

  • update the date or time

  • make it all-day or timed

  • change its color

  • turn conflict enforcement on or off

  • adjust its group or organization-wide settings where applicable

Important note

Time blocks are now more than simple visual markers. They still do not automatically change existing lessons or events, but they do actively surface and organize conflicts so you can review and resolve them from the calendar.
